Here’s a story I wrote for the revived MDW Fair’s ‘Atlas’, a publication of creative writing about the geography of the American Midwest. The longish essay is an experiment in place-writing, collage and commonplacing. and stiches together narrative journalism, journal entries, and longform quotations.
The piece opens with my reponses to three open-ended questions put to me by the project’s Illinois editor, Nance Klehm. Nance asked the same questions to all the writers she has worked with for the series, I think as a way to cultivate a shared sense of theme and purpose among the atlas entries.
